Brody Rodning

A left-handed pitcher from Gaylord, Minnesota, Rodning grew up an hour out of Minneapolis in small-town Midwest. He stayed local for his college ball at Minnesota State University to pitch at the division two level. After pitching well there for three years, the Toronto Blue Jays drafted him in the 13th round of the 2017 MLB Draft.

Rodning’s pro career started in Vancouver with the Canadians in low-A. 2018 flashed improvement from Rodning with A-ball Lansing Lugnuts and a 3.89 ERA over the course of a full season. Unfortunately for Rodning, 2019 began an unfortunate trend of health.

Only pitching once before August, Rodning was able to salvage the season by succeeding in Lansing again, making seven appearances. With the 2020 minor league season canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Rodning needed to wait until 2021 to pitch at double-A New Hampshire for the Fisher Cats.

A fine 2021 campaign led Rodning to pitch in the Arizona Fall League with the Blue Jays wanting Rodning to get more work in after a short 2019 and no 2020 season. In the desert, he struck out three batters for each walk facing players with varying levels of minor experience.

Expecting to take a lead forward in 2022, Rodning tore his UCL in spring training and needed to undergo the dreaded Tommy John Surgery to save his career, which caused him to miss the entire season and first two months of 2023. Rodning recovered, but after 8 appearances in low levels for Toronto, the Blue Jays released Rodning in July.

Instead of giving up, Rodning went back to work and kept his baseball career alive. Tread Athletics in North Carolina welcomed Rodning to its facility and showcased the southpaw to baseball teams, including the Lake Country DockHounds, that Rodning can still pitch.

The Blue Jays’ loss turned into Lake Country’s gain, bringing Rodning close to home and keeping the ball rolling. Rodning immediately stood out in camp and became a high-leverage reliever for the Hounds. With a 1.93 ERA and 25 strikeouts to only three walks in 14 innings Rodning caught the attention of several major league organizations. The Houston Astros blinked first and signed Rodning, bringing him back to affiliate ball.

Brody started his second chance in high-A with the Ashville Tourists for a softer landing in the organization. After a handful of appearances, Rodning got his bump back to double-A three years following his season there before Tommy John surgery. Rodning settled in nicely in Corpus Christi, striking out 17 while walking only four in 13.2 innings.

Houston re-signed Rodning who was able to appear in a couple spring training games without allowing a run, which prompted his start of 2025 at triple-A, the new highest level of baseball for Brody Rodning, with the Sugar Land Space Cowboys. Rodning recorded a strikeout in his triple-A debut during opening weekend, with his eyes on getting the call to the show.
