Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, it shouldn’t be a surprise that Demetrius Sims is one of many athletes in his family. The three-sport high school star is the younger brother of former NFL tight end Dion Sims, but “Meech” elected to play baseball at Bethune Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida. A strong junior season led the Wildcats to a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship and a spot in the 2017 NCAA Baseball tournament. In the 14th round of the MLB Draft, the Miami Marlins selected Sims, keeping him in Florida and beginning his professional career.
A short stint in rookie ball post-draft prepped Sims for his first minor league stop in the New York Penn League for the Batavia Muckdogs, where Sims spent his entire 2018 season at the low-A level. 2019 started with a promotion to the Midwest League for the Clinton LumberKings in Iowa, which was a short stint due to another promotion after Sims posted a .297 batting average with 27 runs in 43 games. Sims got to go back to Florida for high-A and represent the Jupiter Hammerheads for the remainder of the 2019 season.
Post-pandemic, Sims opened 2021 with the double-AA Pensacola Blue Wahoos, and remained in Florida’s panhandle all season. 2022 opened for Sims at his highest level of baseball, triple-A Jacksonville for the Jumbo Shrimp. His stint at triple-A did not last for the entire season, but propelled him to a very successful conclusion to the year at double-A.
In the offseason, the Marlins organization released Sims, making him a free agent and paving the way for Sims to become a DockHound. A little over a month later, Sims signed with Lake Country and became a centerpiece in what the organization hoped would lead to more success on the field after its first season; and Sims delivered.
Fantastic defense at shortstop, thrilling baserunning, and steady hitting from Sims gave Lake Country plenty to cheer for. This strong season led Sims to play in the Baseball Champions League and in the Mexican Winter league before making the jump to the LMB for 2024 to play for Quintana Roo. After Sims’ contract expired, he returned to Lake Country in the opening month of the season and with a similar performance to the year before, Sims guided the DockHounds to the franchise’s first postseason berth.
More than a great player, Sims is a better person. You’d be hard pressed to find a DockHound who interacts with the fans more before and after games on the first base side. This offseason, Sims and his wife moved to Oconomowoc where they celebrated their first wedding anniversary and the birth of their first child. When he takes the field, Sims will become the first DockHounds three-year position player.
